SUPERWHATEVER
So I got an unexpected reprieve this morning when a train leaving the Bridgeport station basically took down all the overhead power lines and crippled travel in both directions. Nice. But good news to my tired ears, since I only got a few hours' sleep last night. That, and the whole area is supposed to be pounded by snow. The local weatherman declared we'd be getting 1"-2" OF SNOW AN HOUR (emphasis MINE).
Crikey. That's one spicy snowball.
Rather than go back to bed, I instead stopped off at the supermarket to return a RedBox DVD (crikey again--$1-a-night rentals!) and to stock up on some food essentials before the storm hits. The movie was Superbad. My wife and I wanted to like it--at least as much as we liked Knocked Up and 40-Year-Old Virgin (extra hyphen MINE). We thought it was SuperOK. Actually, the film was pretty sloppy and schizophrenic. I'm sure if I were fifteen I would have loved it.
I can describe my overall impression of the film in two ways: It was like Napoleon Dynamite as directed by Judd Apatow; or, if you'd prefer, American Pie as directed by John Hughes.
Sure, the movie definitely had its funny moments, but as much as I loved McLovin's character, his storyline, especially with its off-putting man-child cops, could and should have been an entirely separate movie. But like I said, there are some genuinely odd and strangley touching moments that you wouldn't find anywhere else but in an Apatow film.
If you haven't already, see Knocked Up instead. It purports to be a raunchy, irreverent (romantic) comedy, but it's not. It's got some serious drama chops, and puts its leads through their paces in a way that similar movies of this kind seldom do. Sure, this is a date movie, but for battle-weary couples who can relate to the film's almost bi-polar highs and lows.
By the way, it's 8:30 AM and the snowfall has begun. Had I gone into work today (I was two minutes from the parking garage when I found out about the overhead power lines), I definitely would have gone home early. All I can say is--I look forward to playing with my son in the forecasted 6"+ of snow. My wife and I bought him a sled for Christmas that we may just have to bust out a little early...
